Departure Ready vs TripIt

TripIt has been organizing trips since 2006 and is very good at it. This page is about the specific places where the two products genuinely differ. Every claim about TripIt below links to TripIt's own documentation, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Where TripIt is the better choice

A comparison page that only flatters its author is not worth reading.

Pick TripIt if any of these matter to you

  • You want it to cost nothing. TripIt's free tier includes inbox scanning and three document uploads per trip. Departure Ready has a 7-day trial and then costs money.
  • You do not want to forward anything. TripIt's Inbox Sync reads your Gmail, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Yahoo or Outlook.com inbox automatically. Departure Ready asks you to forward, deliberately, because it means we only ever see the emails you chose to send us.
  • You are on Android. TripIt has a native Android app. Departure Ready is iOS plus web today.
  • You travel for work on Concur. TripIt is owned by SAP Concur and plugs into that world.
  • You want flight alerts, seat tracking and point balances. Those are TripIt Pro features Departure Ready does not have.

Pick Departure Ready if any of these matter to you

  • You book with small operators. Guesthouses, regional ferries, local tour companies, independent restaurants. These are the bookings TripIt itself says may not be supported.
  • Your confirmations are not in English, French, German, Japanese or Spanish.
  • Your booking details live in the attachment. Departure Ready reads every attachment on the email, including PDFs and .pkpass boarding passes, and can show the real gate barcode in the app.
  • You forward from more than one inbox. Work, personal and your partner's, all into one itinerary.
  • You want a wrong detail fixed in one tap rather than edited by hand.

Templates versus reading

Almost every travel organizer built before 2023 works by pattern matching. Someone writes a parser for Air France, another for Marriott, another for Booking.com. When the format holds, the result is fast, cheap and exact. When a provider redesigns its email, or a provider was never important enough to get a parser written for it, there is nothing to match and the booking falls through.

That architecture is why supported-vendor lists and supported-language lists exist at all. They are an honest description of how much of the world somebody had time to hand-code.

Departure Ready sends the email to Claude and asks it to read the thing. There is no vendor list and no language list, because there is no list to be on. A Portuguese guesthouse confirmation and a Delta e-ticket are the same kind of problem: text a competent reader can understand. That also means Departure Ready fails differently. A template parser is either right or silent. A reader can be wrong, which is exactly why every card carries a Something wrong? link that re-reads the source email and asks you to confirm the correction before it is applied.

Questions people actually ask.

Is Departure Ready cheaper than TripIt Pro?
Yes. Departure Ready is $14.99 USD a year, or $4.99 a month. TripIt Pro is listed at $49 a year on TripIt's own pricing page. TripIt also has a genuinely useful free tier, which Departure Ready does not, so the fair comparison is $14.99 a year against either $0 or $49 depending on which TripIt you mean.
Does TripIt read confirmation emails in French or Spanish?
Yes. TripIt's help center states it supports confirmation emails in English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. What it does not claim is any language outside those five. Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Greek, Turkish, Korean, Mandarin, Thai, Arabic and Hebrew confirmations are not on TripIt's supported list, and TripIt lists language as a documented cause of import failure. Departure Ready has no language list because it does not use one.
What happens with a small hotel or a regional ferry operator?
This is the clearest difference, and TripIt documents it themselves. TripIt's help center says bookings from boutique hotels and restaurants, smaller regional travel suppliers, and other vendors not yet supported can end up as Unfiled Items rather than real plans. Departure Ready has no supported-vendor list to fall off, because the email is read rather than matched against a template.
Should I switch from TripIt?
Not necessarily. If your travel runs through large airlines and hotel chains, if you want automatic inbox scanning instead of forwarding, or if you need an Android app, TripIt is the better fit today and its free tier costs nothing. Departure Ready is the better fit if you book through small operators, if your confirmations arrive in a language outside TripIt's five, or if you want boarding passes and every attachment read rather than the first one.
Is Departure Ready on Android?
Not yet. Departure Ready is an iOS app plus a web itinerary that opens in any browser, including on Android. TripIt has a native Android app.
